Effect of Gamma Irradiation on UHMWPE Reinforced by Carbon Nanotubes

Researchers from the University of Zaragoza have studied the effects of gamma radiation on UHMWPE reinforced by 1-5% muliwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The incorporation of MWCNTs reduced the negative effects of irradiation and compensated for the reduction in toughness. This fact might be attributed to the radical scavenger behaviour of the MWNT as was confirmed by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance detection of the radiation-induced radicals.
